What is MDF? ?
MDF; It is a material produced as a result of heated pressure of panel roughcast that is obtained via strings,
derived from thermo mechanically wooden and other lignocellulosic raw materials, which are dried with an
addition of syntactical glue till a certain moisture level.
The presence of fibers at any point of MDF equally and intensively allows its both surfaces as well
as its edges to be handled via machines without gaps between the particles of the materials and without
any crashes resulting from the machine. In this way, MDF can successfully be used in manufacturing of table trays,
door panels, and drawer parts with expensive edges and profile horizons. MDF, with its extremely
smooth and homogeneous surface, creates a perfect base both in painting and decorative foil,
PVC or timber cladding.
Its uniform thickness with suitability for handling in the machine and solidity, allows MDF to be used in drawer sides, mirror frames and moldings as an alternative for solid wood.
How to Manufacture MDF? ?
For MDF manufacturing, the rasping obtained from soft trees are subjected to steam and
are underwent through the defibrator to be converted to wood fiber. Then, these fibers are
dried with additions of glue, paraffin and stiffener. After this process, the fibers mixed with the uniting materials are cut.
By the pre-pressing to be carried out after this process, the fiber panels pressed approximately until they
became semi-thickness of the original one, the edges of the panels are shaved and re-dimensioned.
In the following high heat-pressure step, the fiber panels are pressed under high pressure and heat to
be panels at desired thickness after being unified with the combining ingredients. The last step is the process in
which the pressed panels are cooled and rubbed in order for it to take a perfect surface. Now, fiber MDF of high superior
qualities are ready to be used for any kind of manufacturing.
MDF Types
According to its area of usage: They can be classified as thin MDF (1,8-3 mm thickness), thick MDF, moisture-resistant, outdoor places-resistant, fire-resistant and the ones being used in furniture manufacturing.
According to its specific weight: it can be classified as light fiber panels (soft), semi-rigid fiber panels, and rigid fiber panels.
Characteristics of MDF
In fact, MDF is a combination of rigid fiber panel and standardized board. It is an alternative for solid wood with its physical and mechanical qualities.
Any kind of liquid surface applications such as lake, paint and varnish can be applied on MDF, as it has a high-density and almost completely smooth surface.
Surfaces of MDF panels can be covered with any kind of laminate, resin-impregnated paper, folio and timber cover.
Side-parts of MDF is smooth and tense, which allows it to be opened by using tongue-and-groove without using solid wood slip and be given any shape.
Another superior side of MDF is that its elasticity resistance and screw/nail holding capacity are high.
